BV Matwerk was founded in 2007 as an umbrella organisation in the area of material science and technology. DGKK was one the founder. At the moment BV Matwerk comprises 26 full members ranging from "Aluminium Deutschland" to "Wissenschaftlicher Arbeitskreis Werkstofftechnik",  an industry-related association and a society of University professors, respectively.

Since a couple of years there is joint meeting with the Studientag MatWerk in conjunction with the annual assembly.

BV MatWerk, in collaboration with the DGKK, has published a position paper on innovations in materials research. The paper also addresses the importance of crystalline materials.
